The final countdown

It will soon be time to exhibit my selected work at the Perth UHI graduate showcase 2023.

In my final year of study in Art and Contemporary Practices BA (Hons), I have been working on a body of work - Moments that focuses on the preciousness of time and acts of relaxation, contemplation and reflection.

Special moments were captured in photographs but I wanted to bring the 2D images alive and turn memories into tangible artworks.

Material choices included gold wire as it reflected the light- resembling the dancing light on the water and netting due to its flexibility and how the different colours layer beautifully with each other.

Other works included an interpretation of the colours of the sky and clouds from an early morning swim using netting and wire mesh, a collection of deep blue skys documented over the years and recreating the feeling of sunshine.

Included in the body of work was a set of three small acrylic experimental paintings. These became the work that was submitted for the showcase - depicting my memories of the various stages of a glorious Mediterranean sunset.

These were scanned at a high resolution and cropped in photoshop with the colour balance tweaked to match the original work as the scanned files were much darker.

The idea was to print the paintings onto transparent fabric at large scale and hang from the ceiling. Using small models helped create different modular layouts to accommodate a variety of spaces. The sections in between the art panels are string curtains to allow the viewer to walk through - similar to the feeling you get as you pull back your balcony curtain to take in the view.

The final result was exhibited in a nightclub and although initially concerned with the lighting, the UV club lights worked beautifully as they moved around the work highlighting the vibrancy of the colours and attracted interest from the viewers.
