Subject matter

Colour has been apparent in my work since I started my studies and is a key theme in my current practice. Artists that inspire me with their use of colour are Jim Lambie with his psychedlic visually striking floor patterns, David Batchelor and his sheer passion for colour and how it affects us and Eva Rothschild who adds splashes of colour against the black in her work.

Examples of these artists work is shown below - Eva Rothschild My world and Your World, Jim Lambie - Zobop and David Batchelor - Brick Lane Remix.

Other subject matters that I often reference in my work is Nature and Time. This is apparent in the work below I created in response to Covid 19 - No entry with a face mask (acrylics) where the only place you could be free of restrictions was in the forest.

Natural patterns that form such as algae inspire my acrylic pours, as I like them to be in control of how they flow and the only thing I choose is the colours. Artist Richard Sabrew creates paint and paintings from iron oxide extracted from polluted streams as shown in the middle image in his Chroma series - Chroma 4.

Both Time and colour are referenced in my installation Self Portrait (ice, watercolour, wire, felt) where I carefully created the colours that I was drawn to and then analysed what they revealed about me in the final self portrait.

Choice of Media

I like to work with paint, mixed media, collage, digital, sculpture and installation and enjoy experimenting, finding new media to work with.

Ideas to explore

  • Layer colours on paper - e.g. watercolour layers beautifully

  • Layer colour on different materials ( indoors and outdoors) - e.g. tissue paper, coloured acetate, coloured cellophane and how it looks at different times of day and weather.

  • Stain glass window and how it changes with natural light and sunlight.

  • Make a kaleidoscope

  • Experiment with marbling

  • Create individual work in single colour only - e.g. red, blue or yellow to see if am excited by the use of colours together or is it individual colour that I love?

  • Add colour to inside and outside trees/plants? coloured pipe cleaners Yarnbomb style?

  • Experiment with printing techniques

  • Explore ceramics - workshop

  • Mini outdoor installations - eg magic mushrooms (clay and paint in neon patterns) inspired by Funghi Foray at Hospitalfield.

  • Play with projections and coloured filters/ silhouettes
